Conservatives Don't Understand Satire

I've heard it from conservative friends of mine. I've heard stories from others. But this really makes me laugh. A recent study from The Ohio State University found that just as many conservatives enjoy watching Stephen Colbert's The Colbert Report as liberals. Why would Conservatives enjoy watching a show hosted by a man who constantly mocks their entire philosophy? Well, they think he isn't joking.
This study investigated biased message processing of political satire in The Colbert Report and the influence of political ideology on perceptions of Stephen Colbert. Results indicate that political ideology influences biased processing of ambiguous political messages and source in late-night comedy. Using data from an experiment (N = 332), we found that individual-level political ideology significantly predicted perceptions of Colbert's political ideology. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements. Conservatism also significantly predicted perceptions that Colbert disliked liberalism. Finally, a post hoc analysis revealed that perceptions of Colbert's political opinions fully mediated the relationship between political ideology and individual-level opinion.

I suppose this just means that Stephen is the man. After all, he did try to get on the primary in South Carolina as both a Democrat and a Republican. His desire, as with most television hosts, to appeal to a wide audience has obviously worked.

And who knows... maybe I'm the wrong one, and he really is a conservative wolf in wolf's clothing. The answer to that, of course, is no, I'm not wrong. I'm right. Colbert himself said he doesn't let his children watch his program because he doesn't want them to get mixed messages. I won't comment at all about the probable correlation between intelligence and understanding editorial satire. Oops, I guess I just did.

Here's a little clip from the Olbermann. Enjoy your day everyone.

So many conservatives don't even have a sense of humor. A sense of humor is a sign of intelligence. And I'm tired of calling them Conservatives. I'm actually conservative fiscally, which they clearly are not. How about we call them "Regressives"? They want us to regress to barefoot and pregnant, gays in the closet and marginalized like the women, blacks under economic and social slavery. That's what they really want...Regressives.
