Really. Wouldn't it be great if the people in charge actually had our best interests in mind? Wouldn't it be wonderful if they were honest with their intents? Wouldn't it be lovely if, when someone says that they are in favor of de-regulation, they actually think that deregulation is better for America and not just their rich donors?
As it became clear to me while watching Saturday Night Live, bailing out a lot of these mortgage companies is kinda bullshit. $700 billion (that's $700,000,000,000) is the price tag of the corporate bailout now on the table before Congress. There's no doubt that throwing more money at these burning companies will have a positive effect on wall street. The hope is that it will save main street as well, and all the people who's retirement funds are invested in this companies.
But who's the 'decider' in which of these companies gets bailed out? I guess many companies will be clamoring to get rid of all that bad paper floating around. But should we really be paying them? And if the government buys all the piles and piles of crappy mortgages on homes that have half the value of the mortgage to begin with, will the people see any benefit? Really. It's our money, after all, bailing out these companies. We're buying the bad mortgages at a reduced rate no doubt. Will we not be able to reduce the amount owed by the people so that, oh I don't know, they are able to afford the payments again? I'm sure there's problems with lowering mortgage amounts, but I don't care.
Deregulation of our financial markets (and printing out money like there's no tomorrow) got us into this mess. And now the big "deregulator" of the season, John McCain, is pushing for a NEW 3-letter regulating entity to add to the "alphabet soup" of regulatory agencies. So hey, John McCain, I have a question. How do you propose we bail out all these big banks, spending next to $1 trillion (yup, that's $1,000,000,000,000) dollars, and still LOWER taxes? You're advocating a spending increase of another $3,300 for every man, woman and child in the United States, and still you think you're going to lower taxes for your rich wife?
Even George Bush 41 realized that you can't wage a war without raising taxes. Now, we have two wars, and a new economic war against deflation. How ever are we going to wage them all without raising taxes somewhere?
Call me when the revolution comes.
